Hospital Admission Support
Types of Admissions
Hospital admissions can vary based on the reason for your stay:
- Emergency (Unplanned): In a medical emergency, call triple zero (000) for assistance. If it's urgent but not life-threatening, you can go to the emergency department directly.
- Overnight or Extended (Planned): Follow the instructions in your admission notification. Bring this document and any required forms to the hospital, where you'll check in and may need to pay for any out-of-pocket expenses.
- Maternity (Planned): If you're in labor, contact the maternity department. Upon arrival, a midwife will assess you and admit you if necessary.
- Day Procedure: Bring your admission notification and any required health questionnaires, check in at reception, and complete necessary paperwork.
If you need language assistance or have a disability, all Victorian public hospitals offer free interpreting services, including Auslan for hearing impairments. You can request an interpreter during your stay.
For those with visual impairments, ask about receiving information in alternative formats. Hospitals are equipped with accessibility features, including wheelchair ramps and accessible facilities.
Additional Support
If you have questions or need assistance, don't hesitate to contact your GP, hospital administration staff, or ward clerk.
